The spatulate sculpin is a small, elongated fish found in cold saltwater regions of the Atlantic and Pacific near North America. It lives on sandy or muddy bottoms mixed with stones, hunting mostly large bottom invertebrates. This species is not targeted as a game fish.

Lives on sandy or sandy-mud sea bottoms with stones in cold saltwater from shallow depths to nearly 930 meters, mainly in the North American Atlantic and Pacific regions.
