The skipjack shad is a strong, fast-swimming fish known for its impressive leaps. It migrates upstream in spring to spawn and mainly feeds on small fish and aquatic insects. This species adapts well to fresh, brackish, and saltwater environments in North America.

Where they live

Found in North American rivers, coastal brackish waters, and the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico regions. Prefers fast-flowing freshwater sections during migrations and spawning seasons.
