The mud carp is a freshwater fish found commonly across Asia. It has a fusiform body shape and typically inhabits shallow to moderately deep waters. This species mainly feeds by grazing on aquatic and terrestrial plants.

Found in freshwater habitats across Asia, often in depths ranging from 5 to 20 meters. Frequently recorded in rice field environments where they are sometimes farmed.
