Found in coastal and offshore waters of North America, the Atlantic, Caribbean, and Gulf of Mexico. Inhabit coral reefs, rocky bottoms, mangroves, estuaries, and occasionally freshwater environments. Typically found at depths from 5 to 180 meters.
