The checkered puffer is a small, fusiform fish known for its distinctive beak-like teeth used to crush prey. It primarily feeds by crushing various small crustaceans and larvae rather than swallowing prey whole. This species is found in shallow to moderately deep coastal waters and is not considered a game fish.

Where they live

Inhabits brackish and saltwater environments including coastal areas of the Atlantic, Pacific, Caribbean, and Gulf of Mexico. Typically found from shallow waters down to around 48 meters deep.
