The burbot is a unique freshwater member of the cod family with an elongated body. It is primarily active at night and in low light, living in deep lakes and large rivers. Known for seeking shelter in underwater crevices and vegetation, it is a stealthy predator.
Where they live
Burbot inhabit deep freshwater lakes and large slow-moving rivers across North America, Europe, and Asia. They prefer habitats with plenty of shelter such as rocks, roots, and dense vegetation. They are often found from shallow waters down to 700 meters deep.
