The American plaice is a bottom-dwelling flatfish found in cold Atlantic waters. It has a deep, short body and can grow up to about 83 cm long. This species is a predator that hunts various small marine animals along soft ocean floors.

Found in North Atlantic saltwater, typically from 90 to 250 meters deep over soft bottoms where temperatures range from -0.5 to 2.5°C.
